Dark circles are often blamed on late nights, but many people with plenty of sleep still have them. That is because there are several different causes, and each one responds to different care. Understanding your type saves time and money spent on eye creams that cannot help.
Types of dark circles
Pigmented dark circles
Brown darkening caused by extra melanin in the skin. Very common in Indian skin, often running in families, and worsened by sun exposure, rubbing the eyes, allergies and eczema.
Vascular dark circles
Bluish or purplish colour from blood vessels showing through thin under-eye skin. Often more noticeable when tired or unwell.
Structural dark circles
Shadows cast by hollows under the eyes (the tear trough) or by puffiness. These become more noticeable with age and volume loss.
Many people have a mix of types.
Common causes and triggers
- Genetics and family tendency
- Rubbing the eyes, often due to allergies or eczema
- Sun exposure
- Thin skin and ageing
- Lack of sleep, dehydration and screen strain
- Anaemia and thyroid problems in some people
- Smoking
Simple steps that help
- Treat allergies and avoid rubbing your eyes
- Use sunscreen and sunglasses outdoors
- Sleep well and stay hydrated
- Use a gentle, fragrance-free eye cream or moisturiser
- Cold compresses can reduce puffiness temporarily
- Get blood tests if you also feel tired or look pale, as anaemia can contribute
What does not help
Potato slices, cucumber and toothpaste do not lighten pigment. Steroid or bleaching creams applied around the eyes can thin the skin and cause more problems. Be cautious with strong actives in this delicate area unless prescribed.
Treatment options a dermatologist may suggest
Treatment is chosen after the type of dark circle is identified. At Dr. Lasi's, dark circles treatment options include:
- Prescription creams to reduce pigment and support thin skin
- Mild chemical peels for pigmented dark circles
- Q-switched laser for selected cases of pigment
- Microneedling to improve skin quality
- Dermal fillers to soften hollows that cast shadows
Most people benefit from a combination. Improvement is gradual, and realistic goals are a fresher, less tired look rather than completely even skin.
When to see a doctor
- Dark circles that appeared suddenly
- Swelling, redness or itching around the eyes
- Darkening along with tiredness, breathlessness or weight changes
- Dark circles that bother you despite good home care
